Brutalism In New Delhi

A TRIBUTE TO FEW OF MY FAVORITE Brutalist architecture IN NEW DELHI
Architecture: NDDB (National Dairy Development Board)
Architect: Ar. Achyut Kanvinde.
Style: Brutalism
The office of the National Dairy Development Board (1985) is a modernist tribute to India's emerging architectural vernacular. Clean panels mingle with sloping exterior balconies, from which spring lush pockets of green, reminiscent of the hanging gardens of Babylon. Stacked cantiliverd compartments create a feeling of dynamic spontaneous growth. The NDDB is a monument to architect Achyut Kanvind's vision of a carefully constructed India that combined historical aesthetics with the needs of a rapidly industrial society: a veritable temple to the sacred cow to which it is devoted. -Naomi Davenport
Architecture: Shri Ram centre for Art and Culture
Architect: Ar. Shivnath Prasad
Style: Brutalism
Any discourse on modern Architecture in India will be incomplete without mentioning the name of Ar. Shivnath Prasad. He is often called as the Indian Corbusier. What is remarkable is that he never worked with Corbusier in any project but still absorbed his theories to such an extent that the buildings he produced can be said to bear signatures of the master himself!
Architecture: NDMC, Delhi
Architect: Kuldip Singh
Style: Brutalism
Brutalism is a style in Architecture which rejects any external decorative cladding and even paint and plaster, keeping the building's concrete structure exposed as the finished facade. The aim was to represent brutal honesty in architectural form.
India saw the first phase of brutalism when French architect Le Corbusier designed some of the world's seminal brutalist buildings in Chandigarh and Ahmedabad in the early 1950's. This set an example and influenced the architecture styles of many first generation architects of independent india.
One can see some beautiful brutalist buildings in the capital city of India which were built between late 1960's and early 1980's.
